About me

My Story

I have enjoyed a career in the design and construction industry for over thirty years and during this time I have learned many skills and worked on interesting and rewarding projects.  My passion is carpentry and I have been fortunate to receive commissions  to design and build a wide range of pieces ranging from furniture to bespoke kitchens and conservatories.

In more recent years, I have been designing and making items using  my own inspiration, and I find it immensely satisfying  to create something of my own design, with no constraints, only my imagination to limit me.

Thankfully,  other people  appreciate and  see the beauty in the art I create, so by natural progression I have decided to share my work allowing  you  the opportunity to  purchase and own a unique piece to enjoy for years to come.

The right tools for the job

My modest workshop is close to my home at East Boldre in the beautiful New Forest, Hampshire. Over the years I have collected some amazing machinery some of which I have enjoyed restoring and updating, such as my  2 lathes pictured on this page.  I  also have  many unique tools in my workshop, which I have made to my own specification, many of which you would not find anywhere else.
Although I make full use of traditional woodworking methods, I find sometimes with the contemporary work, I am compelled to think innovatively to create  solutions and tools to get the result I am seeking, fortunately this all adds to my enjoyment!

My work; Unique and one of a kind

I am not limited to woodwork, I enjoy working with many different materials; steel, wood, plastics, resins to name but a few. When I design a piece I can draw on this versatility to incorporate the different materials to give a more overall aesthetic design. This design element is just as important as the craftsmanship, because thoughtful design can turn an object of utility into an object of art.
Every process is undertaken by myself from inception & design through to completion and I strive for perfection in all aspects. I am meticulous with attention to detail which makes me proud of every piece created, that’s why I attach my name stamped on a small stainless steel tag, with a unique identification number, evidence it is a genuine Varndell creation.
